NPC
A Non-Player Character (NPC) is a computer-controlled entity in a game or simulation, designed to populate the environment and drive narrative action.
NPCs are the digital support cast: characters not directly controlled by a human player. Traditionally, they relied on simple, predetermined scripts (e.g., a shopkeeper selling an item or a guard following a patrol route). Modern technology, specifically integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) and advanced AI, transforms them into dynamic, context-aware agents. This shift enables complex, unscripted dialogue and emergent gameplay, moving beyond static responses to create highly immersive virtual experiences. The goal is realistic interaction, where an NPC like a quest-giver or adversary can react dynamically to player choices, significantly enhancing world credibility (e.g., in games like *Red Dead Redemption*).
