Image Morphing

Image Morphing is a feature-based visual transformation technique: it seamlessly blends a source image into a target image across a sequence of intermediate frames.

This technology executes through two core operations: geometric warping and cross-dissolving. Warping aligns the key features—like eyes or nose contours—using user-defined control points or lines to match the destination image's structure. Simultaneously, a cross-dissolve operation linearly interpolates the pixel colors, ensuring a smooth color transition. The technique gained massive public attention in 1991 with the photorealistic face-morphing sequence in Michael Jackson's 'Black or White' video, establishing it as a staple of digital visual effects (VFX).
